Member of the month

Amy and I are so proud to introduce you to  your Northlake member of the month for January. Beth Ann is another one of our original members here at CFN. It has been great watching her progress during her time with us. Everyday day  Beth Ann and I have a lunch date here at CFN were we don’t relax and talk about our work day but, discuss how to complete the day’s WOD.  Since joining the Northlake family, Beth Ann has hit several PR’s (personal records). A few of those PR’s include a new back squat weight, shoulder press, and a new 5k row time. Beth Ann has also become a better runner since joining back in October. I don’t know many people that are as hard working and driven as Beth Ann 🙂 This shows in her workouts as she continues to push herself to post better times everyday. Thanks for setting such a great example for us here at the gym.

1: Where are you from originally?

I grew up in Stow, Ohio and after graduating from Miami University, moved to Charlotte – have lived here for almost 23 years.

2. What is your favorite WOD/movement?

Kipping Pull ups – no, I cannot do them yet, but this is a skill that I started at 0, so I can see my progress and as I build on each movement, I know I am getting closer to succeeding.

3. What is your least favorite WOD/ Movement?

Honestly, running – while I have gotten faster since I started, I still marvel at the members who can sprint 800m then lift heavy weights with no problem!

4. What were you doing before CrossFit? How did you hear about CrossFit and/ CrossFit Northlake?

Tabata and Boot Camp classes at Nomad.

Amy Holland at CrossFit Vitality is how I heard about CrossFit and our great coaches at CrossFit Northlake!

5. What other sports or activities do you participate in besides CrossFit?

Driving…I spend a lot of time in car to/from school and the pool with my girls – so when not doing this, working or CF, I like to cook, knit and kayak.

6. How many times per week do you CrossFit?

On average, 3 – I travel for work so there may be weeks where I only get 2, then I may have a string of being able to go 5.  I plan out my work week and have CF as an appointment that is high priority.  I also sign up on the website – another motivator for me – see it as an appt with Jason I don’t want to break!!

7. What is your athletic background?

I was a dancer – 5 days a week practice and competitions – but never played any sports unless you consider Broomball in college (ice rink, brooms, ball and bruises!)

8. Give us some insight as to your thoughts after your first workout at CrossFit Northlake

It’s been the same from the first workout to yesterday’s – I wonder why I am paying for this torture, then have pride in myself for finishing!

9. Do you have any special or favorite CrossFit Northlake memories/moments?

This was preopening – Amy and Jason had a booth at the Davis Lake Fall Festival and were doing a WOD competition.  My 2 girls did it – twice in fact to try to win (my 13yo came in 2nd!) and I was scared to do the challenge.  Now, I want to go head to head with them and would do it in that public forum!

10. What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Northlake?

To really commit to coming to class and increasing mobility – you are going to be sore, but it’s a good sore – it’s a constant reminder that you worked hard.  There is no shame in modifying – and no judgment from your peers in class.  Most of all, what great coaches we have in Jason and Amy – they genuinely care about their members and are helping to create a great community within the box!

11. What is your eating style?

Not doing formal Paleo Challenge (travelling almost half of the 42 day challenge) but am following a paleo plan – very conscious about the word DIET with 2 teenage girls in the house – so am making changes to what I cook, but no one has heard the word paleo.  I will say that the only thing I miss is pasta – not eating it, but having it as a quick dinner with our busy schedule J.  I love to cook, so this challenge has broadened my recipe book for the better!

12. What kind of results have you seen since starting at CrossFit Northlake

I don’t weigh myself for the same reasons I don’t use the word diet– I go by how my clothes feel and after just 2 months, I can tell a difference!

13. What do you do for a living?

I am a project manager for PayPal – I work from home, but have to travel often to Omaha, Phoenix or San Jose.
