November Athlete of the Month – Kate Bartumus

1: Where are you from originally?

Maine

2. What is your favorite CrossFit movement?

I love ‘Helen’ because my strength used to be running.

3. What is your least favorite CrossFit Movement?

Push-ups,  seriously I’m terrible!

4. What were you doing before CrossFit? How did you hear about CrossFit Northlake?

I was a runner and a swimmer growing up. Then turned into a Triathlete after college and really loved competing in them. After my Ironman in 2009, we had Nataly (baby #1). With the life change of moving to NC and juggling working and baby I did not have the time I needed to train for endurance events anymore. So, John introduced me to CrossFit out of his buddy’s garage. Because the WODs can be quick.

I am the type of person that likes to be coached and told what to do for workouts.  I’m horrible at self discipline, but if you can make a competition out of it or someone is telling me what to do…I will do it and try to top them!

That’s what I love most about CrossFit. In 1 hour I get a warm up, strength/skill  training (which I never did before with all the endurance I was doing), and a killer sweat/workout, all with positive educated coaches. **Not to mention it’s a great social/kid free hour all to myself.

The community at CrossFit Northlake is Chocolate Fudge Frosting (paleo of course) on the cake.  I love that no matter what class time I go to, people of all ages and abilities are smiling and encouraging one another. JB, Amy & all the coaches have done such a great job empowering the members and I just love how you set the example and take action of reaching out and helping the non CrossFit community too!

5. What other sports or activities do you participate in besides CrossFit?

As a family we do local charity road races. And I hope to someday get back to doing more triathlons.

6. How many times per week do you Workout?

Three times a week

7. What is your athletic background?

I was on a swim team from age 5-18. Started running x-c & track at age 10, then ran in college for UMaine. I started doing marathons & triathlons after college. And now have been doing CrossFit off & on for about 5 years.

8. Give us some insight as to your thoughts after your first workout at CrossFit Northlake.

My thoughts after my 1st WOD at CrossFit Northlake were, “wow, they are organized, on time, and thorough. The coaches actually demo and explain each movement and watch and give good feedback to help us with proper form.”

9. Do you have any special or favorite Northlake memories/moments?

I love watching and doing the OPEN all together. I’ll never forget the energy of the Open WOD where we saw so many members get their first bar muscle up…and the DETERMINATION of Tommy Ottman ripping his hands so bad and not stopping until time was up! Chills!!!

10. What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining Northlake?

Come, no matter where you are starting form. If you simply just show up, you will get results and leave everyday feeling a sense of accomplishment.

11. What is your eating style?

80/20 Paleo and try to stay away from gluten bc I have Hashimoto’s Disease….although I do love to bake sometimes.

12. What kind of results have you seen since starting at CrossFit Northlake?

Well, since doing CrossFit I really like how my body looks and feels. I don’t care to ever do another marathon (unless at the end of another Ironman, someday). Strength training has made me actually enjoy and like how my body looks and feels. **Also, I have noticed that I get my body back much faster (even with taking more time off after I have my babies), if I do CrossFit through my pregnancies.

13. What do you do for a living?

I am a stay at home Mom of 3.5…Soon to be 4 in January (yes, I still have a few more months with this belly!! haha). Because my husband is a rock star on Tuesday, I get to be a Dental Hygienist 1 day a week.

14. What drives you to be an active family?

I want to SHOW my kids and not just tell them, that exercise and working out is important. They see that Mommy and Daddy make time and invest in being healthy. So I hope that they grow up just assuming that is the norm. And when I am old I want to be the Grandma running around showing the grandkids that I can still hang with them!  🙂
